From Sunday 31 May 2026, Stagecoach East will introduce a series of changes to bus services across Bedford, following a comprehensive review of the network. For residents of Shortstown, Cotton End, Cardington and Cople, there are some important updates to be aware of — including welcome news for families with children at Bedford Academy.
The changes follow months of research and consultation, including analysis of travel patterns, engagement with local councils, and feedback from drivers and residents. Here is what matters for our communities.
What’s Changing on Service 3?
Service 3 — which connects Shortstown with Bedford town centre — will continue to operate, but with one significant change: from 31 May, it will run as a direct service and will no longer stop at Newton Street or Potter Meadows.
If you currently board at either of those stops, you will need to use The Crescent instead, which remains a Service 3 stop. The positive side of this change is that those already using The Crescent will benefit from a faster, more direct journey into Bedford town centre.
| Stop | Change from 31 May | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Newton Street | No longer served by Service 3 | Use The Crescent |
| Potter Meadows | No longer served by Service 3 | Use The Crescent |
| The Crescent | Remains a Service 3 stop | No change needed |
Good News: Bedford Academy School-Time Services Secured
In a significant win for local families, dedicated school-time bus services have been added to support students travelling to and from Bedford Academy. These additions are the result of sustained engagement with Stagecoach by local representatives Leigh Coombs and Tom Middleton, who made it a priority to ensure young people could get to school safely and reliably.
From 31 May, the following school-time services will operate:
| Direction | Departs | From | Arrives | At |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| To school (morning) | 07:56 | The Crescent | 08:03 | Bedford Academy |
| To school (morning) | 08:16 | The Crescent | 08:23 | Bedford Academy |
| From school (afternoon) | 15:30 | Bedford Academy | 15:39 | Shortstown North Drive |
Please note: Service 9 does not stop at Newton Street or Potter Meadows in either direction. Students from those areas will need to make their way to The Crescent or North Drive to board.
“Whilst I welcome the reintroduction of services supporting Bedford Academy so students can travel to school safely, I remain concerned that the availability of public transport for residents of Shortstown has continued to decline over the past three years. This reflects a lack of council funding to support vital rural and edge‑of‑town bus services.”
Councillor Leigh Coombs
“It is essential that the public transport network reflects the needs of the community it serves, and that operators engage meaningfully with residents and local stakeholders. The removal of parts of Shortstown from the bus network represents a missed opportunity to fully embed public transport within a growing community.”
Tom Middleton
Evening Services Running Later
One positive development for the wider area is that evening bus services will be extended across several routes. From 31 May, the last buses on Services 1, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 will run until 10:30pm on weekdays — good news for commuters, shift workers, and anyone travelling home later in the evening.
Other Key Changes Across the Wider Bedford Network
Beyond the routes directly serving our villages, the Stagecoach review brings a number of wider changes to Bedford’s bus network from 31 May:
- Service 5 extended to Woodside Dover Crescent and Mark Rutherford School. Will no longer serve Elms Farm.
- Service 4 extended to Elms Farm and Norse Road, running every 30 minutes (replacing Service 10). Last bus now 10:30pm.
- Service 2W (new) replaces Service 53, with a new route to Wootton via Interchange Retail Park and Wixams.
- Service 7 discontinued. Woodside Dover Crescent now served by the improved Service 5 at 30-minute frequency.
- Service 10 discontinued due to low passenger numbers.
- Service 9 routes standardised between Bedford and Shefford, running every two hours.
A Mixed Picture for Residents
We recognise that views on these changes are likely to differ across Shortstown. For residents who relied on the Newton Street or Potter Meadows stops — particularly those with limited mobility, young children, or no access to a car — the removal of those stops is a genuine loss, and we understand that frustration.
At the same time, we are aware that some residents in the Potter Meadows area had previously raised concerns about bus movements passing through their street, and may welcome the change. Both perspectives are valid, and we want this article to reflect the reality that these decisions affect different households in different ways.
Of particular concern is the position of residents on the newer parts of the Shortstown development, including the New Cardington Fields estate, which is still under construction. For households there, the nearest bus stop may now be well over the 400 metre walking distance that national transport guidance recommends as the maximum for new residential development. We are actively raising this issue and will share updates as our discussions progress.
If you have views — positive or negative — on how these changes affect you, please do get in touch with Cllr Leigh Coombs or Tom Middleton. Your feedback directly informs the case we make to Stagecoach and Bedford Borough Council.
What Should I Do Now?
If you currently use the Newton Street or Potter Meadows stops, plan to use The Crescent stop from 31 May 2026. Check the updated timetable before the changeover date so you know exactly when your bus departs.
For families with children at Bedford Academy, note the new school-time departure times in the table above.
Full updated timetables will be available via the Stagecoach Bus App, which also lets you track your bus in real time and buy tickets before you board. Download it from stagecoachbus.com.
If you have questions or concerns about local bus services, please contact Cllr Leigh Coombs or Tom Middleton. We remain committed to working with Stagecoach, the Council, and residents to ensure our communities have a bus network that meets local needs.
