Residents of Shortstown are being invited to have their say on two new traffic proposals for the streets being built as part of Bellway Homes’ Cardington Hangars development.
Bedford Borough Council is proposing a 20mph speed limit zone and a restricted parking zone covering Mason Road and the surrounding residential streets. Both schemes are required as planning conditions tied to the development, and the council says the lower speed limit is intended to make the road network safer for everyone, including drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists and people on foot.
The 20mph zone and the parking restrictions would each apply to the full length of more than 20 roads, including Blake’s Boulevard, Burney Avenue, Burns Road, Cackett Way, Ford Road, Johnston Avenue, Lipscomb Avenue, Mason Road, Rosier Road, Tinkers Road and Wallis Avenue, among others.

The restricted parking zone would introduce a signed-only “no waiting at any time” rule throughout the area, except in clearly signed and marked parking bays.

The official public notices appear in this Thursday’s edition of the Bedford Times & Citizen (25th June). The proposal documents can be viewed online at www.bedford.gov.uk/proposedtro, or in person during office hours at Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford, MK42 9AP.
This is your chance to be heard. Whether you support the plans or have concerns, the council wants to hear from local people before any decision is made. I would strongly encourage residents to take part. These streets are our community, and the more of us who comment, the better the council will understand what people here actually want.
Comments, either supporting or objecting, should be sent by email stating the grounds on which they are made, no later than 16th July 2026, to highway.consultations@bedford.gov.uk.
If you would like any help understanding the proposals or making your voice heard, please do get in touch.
Leigh
